Hi all,

I am very excited to update you on how some of our juniors are going and also to let you know our plan to move our equipment to a new storage site.

Junior news

First up,  a focus on our juniors. Huge congratulations to three of our club members who participated in last weekend’s NSW Schools Orienteering Championships. Saturday saw two sprint races back-to-back at King’s School with cumulative times counting. The morning was definitely more straightforward than the afternoon with some tricky decisions to be made in the buildings. The middle distance bush event was on Sunday at Mulgoa with steep rocky terrain and slow going off the tracks. Concentration and stamina was needed for that weekend!

All of our juniors who participated did brilliantly, placing in their age categories in all the events they entered:

Abi McGhee – bronze in middle

Brian Tsang – bronze in sprint and silver in middle

Max Povah – gold in sprint and bronze in middle

Ryan Pattison, competing in the novice category as not yet old enough to run schools champs, topped the board in the sprint and was not far off the pace in the middle.

And well done to all the adults who also took part in the attaching State League event, some great results there too – check out eventor.

To round the season out, the Australian Schools Championships are in WA at the start of October and I am sure you will join me in wishing Abigail McGee all the very best. She will be representing NSW in the senior girls events – go Abi!

Finally, a reminder that all juniors who have been orienteering regularly this season may be eligible for a NSW participation award. Saturday Orienteering Series and Summer Series also count towards the points tally. Check out ONSW’s juniors page https://onsw.asn.au/juniors/juniors-information for more info.

Equipment storage

Our club equipment is currently stored in a cage at Epping. We have recently been given the opportunity to rent a garage in Brookvale (the neighbour of a club member has offered this to us as they no longer have a car). The rates would be significantly lower than we are currently paying and the storage area is both secure and dry. This matter was discussed at the last club meeting and the general consensus was that this is a good short-term storage solution for the club. We are still seeking a permanent storage solution with Northern Beaches Council. Please let me know if you have any concerns with moving the equipment to Brookvale or if you have alternative long-term solutions in mind that the club could pursue.

Assuming this is broadly acceptable to club members, the move is likely to be on a weekend in October and we would be grateful to anyone who could help, thanks. We aim to complete an inventory as part of the move to better assist club members collecting the relevant equipment for each event. If you are available to assist please let us know which dates work for you.

Wayne is our current equipment officer and has looked after this for some years now. He lives relatively closely to our current cage which unfortunately means he doesn’t live in the vicinity of the new storage area! For those living on the Northern Beaches, please get in touch if you are willing to replace Wayne in this role. The role largely involves ensuring the equipment is checked in and out and anything lost or broken is duly replaced (at the club’s cost). Thank you Wayne for your efforts to date, much appreciated.

Happy orienteering everyone, I hope to see you at SOS, State League or MetrO over the next month 😊

Cheers,
Rachael
