Lake Parramatta 1979

From the archives ....

The photo below was taken at the first event held at LakeParramatta by (then) Bennelong Occasional Orienteers (BOO) on 8 June 1979. Robert Spry fieldworked and prepared the new map, and was also the event organiser and course setter.

Back:(from left to right) Robert Spry, Ian Rannard (looking away), Rudy Sicha, Colin Rannard.

Middle:Richard Mackender (crouching), Alan Duckers, Arthur Durham (showing a leg), Frank Assenza, Margaret Russell.

Front:Frances Hamilton, Lesley Ubel.

Photo:Sue Thomson

Of the others in the photo, Rudy Sicha, Frank Assenza and Richard Mackender are still members, while Arthur Durham is now a member of Uringa. Colin Rannard is still a regular participant at the Christmas 5-days and is occasionally seen at Summer Series and other local events but is no longer a club member. Lesley Ubel was a workmate of Frank and Arthur, while Margaret Russell and Frances Hamilton were friends of former member Sue Thomson (now with Garingal). Frank and Arthur (looking very trim) trained together at the time, including lunchtime runs and three visits to the gym each week.

Below are sections of the original and current LakeParramatta maps. The area was most recently re-mapped in 2000 as part of the “Kings for a Day” map by Gordon Wilson, which also includes the grounds of the adjoining KingsSchool. The old map shows much less green and less detailed mapping of rock features.
